  17. <p>     Quelle horreur! Everyone knows the French language is
  18. sacrosanct. But that has not kept the government of Prime
  19. Minister Michel Rocard from trying to reform French spelling
  20. to make it easier.

  22. <p>     The proposed changes will affect at most 4,000 of the 50,000
  23. words in use, but such minor "rectifications" cut no ice with
  24. editors and academics who have launched a vigorous
  25. contre-attaque (new spelling: contrattaque). At the center of
  26. their protest is the circumflex accent, a little hat the French
  27. occasionally put over vowels (as in chateau and hotel, crouton
  28. and maitre). To simplify matters, the new rules would remove
  29. it from i's and u's.

  31. <p>     Henri Troyat, a member of the prestigious French Academy,
  32. charged that the omission would "disfigure the soul of a word."
  33. Book editor Yves Berger bemoaned the loss "of this marvelous
  34. chapeau de gendarme [policeman's hat]." The brouhaha grew worse
  35. over the past two weeks as more members of the academy openly
  36. broke with the majority who voted for Rocard's reform last May,
  37. and it is possible they may force another vote. The academy
  38. will discuss the issue at its Thursday meeting this week, and
  39. if it recants, the government will have to think again.
